Program Overview
Pasture, Rangeland, Forage (PRF) is an innovative risk management tool designed by the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) to protect livestock and hay producers against economic losses resulting from lack of precipitation.
PRF utilizes a precise NOAA Climate Prediction Center rainfall index based on a 0.25-degree latitude and longitude grid (approximately 17 x 17 miles). It does not measure rainfall at a single local rain gauge, but rather index rainfall across your grid relative to the 70+ year historic average.
When grid precipitation drops below your selected historical baseline during chosen two-month intervals, an indemnity is automatically generated—no field claims adjusters or loss reporting paperwork required.
Key Benefits & Coverage Details
Automated Indemnity Triggers
No adjuster visits or tedious claims forms. Payments are triggered automatically when NOAA grid rainfall drops below your coverage level.
51% to 59% Federal Subsidy
The USDA pays more than half of the total policy premium, making PRF one of the most cost-effective drought risk management tools.
Customizable 2-Month Intervals
Select which two-month periods (e.g., April-May, June-July) are most critical to your pasture growth and hay harvest.
Use Funds for Any Need
Indemnities can be used freely to buy replacement hay, purchase supplemental feed, haul water, or cover operating costs.
How the Process Works
Locate Your Ranch Grid
We map your ranch acreage to the USDA grid index using your legal descriptions or county land maps.
Select Critical Rainfall Intervals
Distribute your acreage coverage across at least two separate 2-month intervals throughout the grazing season.
Choose Productivity & Coverage Level
Select coverage from 70% to 90% and scale productivity factor from 60% to 150% to match your land value.
Receive Automatic Drought Indemnities
If NOAA reports precipitation below your benchmark interval, indemnities are deposited directly to you.
